Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)
Augmentative means to add to someone’s speech, while alternative refers to communication used instead of speech. There are no-tech, low-tech, and high-tech AAC options to support communication.
No-tech and Low-tech AAC Options:
- Pointing to photos, pictures, or written words
- Spelling words by pointing to letters
- Picture exchange communication
- Drawing or writing
- Gestures, sign language, or facial expressions
High-tech AAC Options:
- Using an app on an iPad or tablet to communicate
- Using a speech-generating device (e.g., computer with a “voice”)
At One Speech Therapy, our licensed speech-language pathologists will teach your child how to use AAC to express their wants and needs. We will work together to determine the most appropriate AAC option to help your child communicate more effectively and participate more fully in day-to-day activities and interactions.
