Literacy Disorders

Literacy is the ability to read and write. During preschool age, children acquire precursors to reading and writing. These are important for successful learning habits and academic achievement.

  • Difficulty manipulating sounds (e.g., participating in rhyming games)
  • Resistance to reading-related activities

Red Flags in Literacy for Early Elementary:

  • Guessing at unknown words or letters
  • Difficulty with writing and spelling
  • Difficulty with retelling stories and answering reading comprehension questions

Red Flags in Literacy for Later Elementary Level and Above:

  • Difficulty understanding how root words, suffixes, and prefixes change the meaning of a word
  • Reduced use of context clues to decipher meaning of complex vocabulary
  • Reduced reading fluency
